Nelly Lahoud participated in the one-day conference, ‘al-Qaeda Transformed: The Core, its Affiliates, and their Splinters,’ organized by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC, on May 30, 2014. Lahoud’s presentation, entitled ‘Is Militancy in Syria Engendering a “Good” al-Qa’ida?’ focused on the divisions between the leading jihadi groups in Syria, Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant. The presentation also discussed how Ayman al-Zawahiri contributed to the current divisions and why by siding with Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Zawahiri risks becoming in the eyes of jihadis the leader of the ‘good’ al-Qa’ida.
