Internships and Research Assistantships

Overview of Opportunities

I. Internship Programs (Summer only – Remote and in-person)
The Combating Terrorism Center’s annual summer internship program offers remote and in-person opportunities to undergraduate, graduate, or recently graduated students with an interest in terrorism and counterterrorism. The Center offers the following internships:
• Research internships
• Editorial internships
• Marketing and Development internships

Applicants have the option to apply for either a 3-month (June-August) or a 6-month internship (June-November). Due to legal constraints, all internships are unpaid.

Research Internships
As a CTC research intern, you will be given the opportunity to participate in the cutting-edge research that the Center conducts on various topics within the realm of terrorism and counterterrorism. The Center’s research publications are frequently featured in academic and policy forums, cited in national and international media outlets, and regularly briefed to leaders in the counterterrorism community at all levels of the United States Government.

Research interns tasks typically include:
• Conducting open-source data collection
• Analysis and visualization of data
• Conducting literature reviews
• Drafting and editing CTC reports and articles
• Providing other editorial support as needed.

In addition to assisting in research projects, you will be invited to:
• Participate in professional development activities
• Participate in briefings to top policymakers and practitioners
• Participate in networking opportunities
• Support other CTC programs, and engage with West Point faculty and students

Editorial Internships
As a CTC editorial intern, you will be given the opportunity to work closely with the CTC Sentinel editorial team to contribute to the Center’s monthly, independent publication. The journal features insight and analysis from leading experts, journalists, and practitioners in the field of terrorism and counterterrorism. Editorial interns play an important role in the editing and production process of the journal. All editorial interns’ contributions will be noted within each Sentinel issue that they work on.

In general, editorial interns’ responsibilities include:
• Fact-checking
• Copyediting
• Article research
• Working one-on-one with members of the editorial staff

Marketing and Development Internships
Every summer, the CTC offers one or two intern positions for marketing and development. As a marketing and development intern, you will be given the opportunity to use your creative and technical skills to raise the profile of CTC through multiple channels. Marketing and brand development interns will work closely with the CTC leadership to support the following activities:
• Undertaking strategic communications campaigns
• Engaging with CTC stakeholders, and alumni
• Assisting with event organization
• Assisting with grant applications

II. Research Assistantship Program (Spring and Fall semesters – Remote only)
The CTC frequently seeks remote research assistants on a needs-basis during the academic year to facilitate research on various projects led by CTC faculty. The CTC has specialists working in the areas of the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa on a variety of topics including jihadism, terrorist alliances, terrorist strategies and tactics, terrorist exploitation of media and technology, and counterterrorism and counterterrorism policy.

If you are interested in working with a specific CTC team member, or on a specific topic, please send a cover letter (indicating your goals, research interests and availability), CV, transcripts, and a short writing sample (published or unpublished) to Amira Jadoon at Applications for research assistantships do not have a specific deadline and will be considered throughout the year.

• Due to legal restrictions, all positions are unpaid.
• Summer internship positions are only available to U.S. citizens.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for all positions.
