CTC Director of Strategic Initiatives Don Rassler, CTC research associate Muhammad al-`Ubaydi, and Belfer Center international security fellow Vera Mironova have co-authored a new CTC Perspectives article entitled “The Islamic State’s Drone Documents: Management, Acquisitions, and DIY Tradecraft.” The piece reviews and provides context for 21 internal Islamic State documents about the group’s drone program, which were recovered in Mosul, Iraq, and provided to the CTC by Mironova. These unique documents, which were also released with the article, significantly enhance what is known about the Islamic State’s use of drones, as they provide an inside look into how the group has sought to cobble together and develop its drone capabilities as well as manage its drone program.
