Jihadi visual propaganda uses images of the globe or planet earth to globalize specific issues and conflicts, as well as to articulate the global dimensions of domestic groups. The image here portrays a region of the globe, around the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East and the African continent, on which a variety of weapons appear. The slogan in the center is a reference to, and a manipulation of, a Qur’anic verse (99:1) that reads: “zalzilu al-ard min tahti aqdamihim” (“shake the ground under their feet”). The slogan, combined with the elements of weapons and a partial globe, is clearly designed to encourage violence, particularly since the portion of the globe includes nearly all current jihadi theaters of operation. The caption in the top right corner and bottom left reads: “la ilaha illa Allah—Muhammad rasul Allah” (“there is no god but God—Muhammad is his messenger”). The text of the takbir (the words “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is greatest”) are repeated up and down the right and left margins of the image.
