In July COL Mike Meese and three representatives from the CTC – LTC Reid Sawyer, Vahid Brown and Don Rassler briefed BG McMaster about the complexities of Afghanistan’s threat environment before he assumed responsibilities as Director of Strategy and Plans (J5) for NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The CTC described how multiple factors shape Afghanistan’s militant landscape and shared their perspective on how the Taliban is both a homogeneous and heterogeneous entity. The role played by important regional actors, such as Pakistan and Iran, was also discussed.
