The article is a study of the understanding of jihad by early militant Kharijites, exploring a range of Qur’anic concepts that correspond to the Kharijites’ understanding of warfare. Its focus is on Kharijite groups (al-Muhakkima, al-Azariqa and al-Najdiyya), whose rebellions were put down before the end of the seventh century.  While dated 2009 this volume of the journal was published in 2011.
