The CTC is pleased to announce the publication of a commentary on U.S. strategy in light of the political changes underway in the Middle East and North Africa entitled “Political Islam’s Adaptive Radiation” by Dr. Scott Helfstein. The article, published at The National Interest Online, examines how the Arab Spring has opened political space making it increasingly difficult to predict political outcomes at a grass roots level. At the same time, the widespread riots of September and October point towards the importance of broader geopolitical trends like cascading behavior. It suggests that consideration of such macro-level dynamics is critical to ensuring that the U.S. is capable of responding to future events in a strategic rather than a tactical fashion.
