In light of the recent conflict between the Philippine government and militants in Marawi, The Washington Post published an article on 12 June on the rise of the Islamic State in Southeast Asia. In the article, author Dan Lamothe cited the Combating Terrorism Center’s latest “Beyond the Caliphate” report, which examined the spread of the Islamic State in the region. He also quoted the CTC’s Director of Strategic Initiatives Don Rassler, who wrote the report with the CTC’s General John P. Abizaid Research Associate Marielle Ness.
